Lenten Fasting and Abstinence
Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday in preparation to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection at Easter.
Fasting Guidelines:
Fasting is required for Catholics ages 18-59, which permits one full meal and two smaller meals that together do not equal another full meal. No snacking between meals.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days requiring fasting.
Abstinence Guidelines:
Abstinence from eating meat is required for Catholics ages 14 and older.
Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays during Lent are days requiring abstinence from meat.
Those who are ill, elderly, pregnant, nursing or whose health would be affected are excused from fasting and/or abstinence.
